Oh Baby! Last night's Season 4 finale was low-key heartbreaking! Everything was going so great, until it wasn't.

The episode kicks off with Issa officially recommitting to Lawrence, "Honestly, I’m at a point in my life where I just want to cut out the bullshit and surround myself with things that make me happy.. like you”.

Even after Lawrence tells Issa, he got the job in San Francisco, they still agreed to “figure it out”. Sidebar; it’s been great to watch Lawrence gradually get back on his feet. He went from sitting on the couch with “WOOT WOOT” to an executive position with his own team, a corner office and an assistant – GO Martin!

Meanwhile, Molly and Andrew’s relationship was lowkey falling apart. Andrew expressed to Molly, that she’s dismissive when it comes to his issues but he’s expected to “bend over backwards”, sorry Molly but it’s true. Their brief argument uncovered several issues that Andrew has been holding in. “Molly you never let shit go!”, another truth. Before Andrew could finish the break-up (which eventually he did), they were interrupted by an emergency phone call from Kelli.

The day before, Tiffany told Derek that she “needed to get out the house” and she’s been missing ever since. Derek and the girls follow a trail of margaritas, Lyft receipts and Mexican restaurants to track her down.

Insecure always manages to skillfully include several important Black issues within a short 28 minute time frame. During the search for Tiffany we see, Derek’s frustration with the police’s lack of urgency to find his Black wife. Compared to the aggressive urgency the police had with Derek and the girls when they were “suspected” to be causing trouble – just because someone said they were. Kelli also had to handle an ignorant white gay guy that claimed to have an “inner black women”, “My outer black woman needs you to shut the fuck up”. Thank you, Kelli.

Finally, they track down Tiffany at her hotel room, who apologized because she “didn’t know what else to do”. Amanda Seals and Wade Allain-Marcus did a beautiful job acting out a heartbreaking moment of hopelessness between a husband and wife. Typically on-screen postpartum depression is portrayed as a “wild” expression but Tiffany’s was more nuanced and true to the helplessness/reclusiveness that many women feel. Once again, bravo Insecure.

As if the episode wasn’t heavy enough, Lawrence came by Issa’s apartment the next morning to drop a bomb on her. Just when we thought we got rid of her, Condola told Lawrence the night before, that she was pregnant with his child. Condola declares that she’s keeping it despite her and Lawrence not being together. She mentioned that she simply “wants to keep it” but she isn’t “trapping him” or “expecting” anything from Lawrence. Shout-out to Prentice Penny for directing this scene so beautifully, the transitions between the, Condola-Lawrence and Issa-Lawrence conversations, allows the audience to feel every characters pain simultaneously.

After hitting a brick wall, Issa and Lawrence's convo ends with Issa telling him “it’s too much”, then she rolls her sorrows into a joint to smoke away the hurt – a VERY relatable coping method.

The final scene has Issa meeting up with... MOLLY?! It’s only right that they met up that the Ethiopian restaurant that’s been the setting for their best and worst moments. Molly says, “Im glad you came” and Issa replies “I’m glad you called”. With both of their hearts broken, it was so touching to see them put their prides aside to rebuild a relationship that they desperately need right now.

This season was high-key incredible. Insecure has maintained its reputation for telling stories about the beautifully complex/nuanced lives of Black people – which is so refreshing given the fact that, the character of our community is often willingly misinterpreted.

This episode left a couple scars on our characters but we are all SO excited to see how they pull it together (or fall apart) in Season five!

Sunday nights at 10pm just won’t be the same anymore.
